I first visited the West Bank in 2005 and was taken on a tour of the “green line” by the UN, which was my first exposure to the plight of the Palestinians. I didn’t return until 2018, when I travelled to Gaza with the charity IDEALS. I began by offering support for the Lower Limb project and gradually went on to lead the Plastic Surgery project.
Since October 2023, I have returned three times and been denied entry once. I have witnessed the decline of Gaza’s healthcare system during this period, with the destruction of hospitals and seen firsthand the suffering of the Palestinian healthcare workers.
Working in Gaza has been a huge privilege but also a substantial challenge. This is mainly due to the restrictive entry requirements imposed on international doctors, as well as the lack of medical facilities, equipment, and medicines.
On my last mission in June 2025 the prevalence of famine and disease compounded the problems.
I became a trustee of IDEALS in September 2025.
